pang yao....as u may have know i have the same problem also in presentation...guess i have spread my grems to u.

this is what i think is useful thoh im not sure of it, but it helps me sometimes..so hopefully it may help u too...

1. try to slllllllooooooowwww ur sentences down, have pauses b4 u continue to the other sentence as this helps ur brain think a bit 4 the right words and points b4 u speak.

2. sometimes it just plain nerves. yea i get nervous...wer just human afterall...so one way is to think that all your audiences are big white feathery chickens, hahaha just kidding..well to over come this, i will always play once in my mind b4 the presentation the things i wanna say and try to remember as much of the points as possible.

3. open with a joke, this always helps me feel more at ease, like always u will see me making everyone clap b4 i present...yup..so now u know, i did it cuz i was nervous.

4. have a script, read it but dont remember it, summarize it into point forms. i try my best to do this, but i always will failed and stray away. good lucks.

5. have a good presentation board with all ur points inside, this helps a lot for me. whenever i present, as i dont or will forgot most of the points, its good that i have good visual to guide me.

hopes this help......

It wasn't so bad, Jinno. Your main points came across. I guess you're just cut up that you couldn't paint a more detailed picture of the beauty of the ideas and the scheme you see in your mind. Peace, Bro..

There are ways and means to overcome this and get better at it. I'd like to offer some help...but later, cos now I have to work on something urgent. Just a quick message to say that we're all there with you.

Thanks Jon for your helpful pointers---all of which I use in my work. There're some more I use in my stagework.

What I'd really really like is for those of us who find little difficulty in oral and verbal presentation to share some of our thoughts. And for all those in our community, esp.those, like me, for whom English is not the first language, to offer some thoughts on our struggle (and little victories) so that our interchange of ideas as we study architecture together can be heightened.

Hey ah jin, here to probably share with you methods I use while presenting. Of course, all 5 points of Jon's are precisely correct. Some other tips i'd like to share are as follow:

1. As you know, the audience/listeners are the most important in a presentation. I always get a little fidgety and nervous when I start seeing my audience getting restless & losing focus; a CLEAR symbol that they are losing interest in what I am or will be saying further. Hence, choose ONLY important points & at times, you have to sacrifice by neglecting other points to cut short your speech. Less is more. And know when to stop or transit to another point by observing the body language of your audience.

2. Breathe in and out 10 times ( or was it 7?) before every presentation. Classic advise, some say myth, but trust me; it works.

3. If you wish, which I have also tried; start your presentation with a bang. Because when your first few words are interesting, you kickstart everyone's minds and attention. And obviously, you would most likely have every ear & eye glued to you, eagerly awaiting what follows.

4. Do not repeat yourself or beat around the bush.

5. Be confident (and show it adequately) with yourself eventhough you know you are under pressure. I disagree with the fact that you mentioned you wanted to exchange brains with keith/ian. Everyone should and can have their own stand/say, and this is, I believe not a sign of disrespecting your lecturers. I observed your many ideas, just waiting to explode out when you have found your niche in presenting which I believe would be anytime soon.

Aite'. Thats another 5 points off my experience in presenting. Hope these pointers helped you or boosted your confidence. Good luck!

hoho... fren... i dino u actually struggle that much... cause to me, u have always been inspirational... u wanna know why?

yes, you may not speak bombastically fortified fancy English..so what? you never let it stop you from giving it your best...and that is what make me respect you for... unlike some who dont really put effort... you do... and i respect you for that...so altho your english may seem to be in a mess sometimes... but i have always enjoyed watching you present...cause you show passion and drive...and thats what keeps you alive, i think...

to me, you already have the confidence and you already have the intellect..what you need is YOUR NOTES...=) get a paper...list your points... it helps...

but when all is said and done...dont ever ever let this bring you down or make you feel like crap..cause you are not and you are worth more than you can imagine...with enough practice, you can touch the sky...who knows what miracles you can achieve if only you believe...just rmb that there is someone watching over you always...

toodles..

just lemme add something for you to ponder upon... tot it mite help...

ask and you shall receive
seek and you shall find
knock and the door will be open unto you
by God's hand and in God's own time

regardless of whether you are Christian or not...this principle stands true... keep pressing on...you'll soar on eagles wings....like what Taylor's like to say, 'when you have the edge its easier to shine'...lol...so just pressing on ya...

bye, thanks for the pics.. really appreciate it..

hey jin... i didn't really know if you were serious at working drawings today when you asked me to help you out. This id my point of view when it comes to presentations. I'm not sure if you noticed this but my style of presenting sometime can be a little different from the way the others present.

You see the same methods do not work for everyone. Most of the points that were mentioned are most probably the most efficient way of presenting but for people like me it doesnt really work because im a very spur of the moment kind of person.

The way i approach my presentations is that i take the audience through the journey of my design they way that i would look at it. honestly. we spend so much time trying to sell our designs to our lecturers and most importantly ourselves that we all know our designs inside out.

i am a firm believer that your personality reflects on your designs and i totally agree with richard when he says that you have a very interesting and like able personality. to tell you the truth i actually like the way you present because it is already entertaining because you do crack some jokes here and there. All you need to work on now is your confidence, as i have mentioned earlier, you would knw your design inside out by now. All you need to do is keep you thoughts a little bit more structured.

filtering is ultimately the most important tool. we always have sooooooooooo much to say but at the end of the day we crack to the pressure of losing the audience. only mention certain things that you really need to highlight. when you feel that you 'writer's block' stop for a while and reflect on how you can address the issue. trust me all you need to work out is how you can pull out the answers to the issues you have already addressed.
it's all already up in your head at the end of the day you go home saying ' damnit!why didnt i say that earlier!'...maybe you can use the note making method but i personally find it really difficult because i tend to want to regurgitate all the notes i made

waaah i wrote damn a lot.*sigh* i'm damn long winded..to sum it all up...jin its all about ur confidence. in order to improve your english you should try reading more. it will help you a lot. think about all the other international architects who dont use english as a first language (ok, maybe not such a good example coz they all might have translators)

good luck jin. i knw u'll do great. you shouldn't question your confidence, just bear it mind we all have our bad days.
