WEEK 10's Schedule
Next week (Week 10, Chernxi tells me) is only 4 weeks to SUBMISSION WEEK @ Week 14. After today's crit you should at the least have filtered out a few unworkable concepts and detected ideas that you know will lead you to a good design. With any luck (and a lot of hard, smart work) it might end with a brilliant design.
You all need see me only once next week, on either Mon or Wed, for a 30 minute slot. So book now below.
There is one condition: You must come for the crit with a STUDY MODEL @ 1:200. Or you won't get a crit. (Sudono and Rozalee who came with basic models today will tell you how useful study models are, however simple they are.)
And it's better to come with a quick rough study model than miss a crit for having no model at all. If you need comments on conceptual ideas you are still exploring before you embark on your 1:200 study model, you can post here and I will give you some guidelines.

Today's crits
In order not to waste your efforts you MUST ALWAYS DESIGN WITH ROOM SIZES and SPACE SIZES in mind.
UNDERSTAND THE SITE, FEEL THE SITE. You have already analysed the site, so you should know everything good and bad about it. EXPLOIT ALL THE GOOD POINTS TO MAKE YOUR SCHEME THE BEST IN THE WORLD! (I'm using subjective language, but you know what I mean.)
Some of the interesting ideas that some of you brought up were:
- The more you overlap the functions so that more spaces have MULTI-FUNCTIONS the richer your design becomes
- You can use more than 1 level (but not more than 2) if you can gently connect the 2 levels and make the journey eventful so that people don't tire from the journey
- Making green spaces part of your design can really loosen up the hard building
- The PROW seems to be an attractive site feature to many of you, and rightly so. You know that you have got to really make this so much part of your scheme that people feel that YOU designed the PROW, and not MPPJ!
- Got to use water features carefully, discretely, cleverly, and not splash them noisily all over the place (if you like water features, that is)
- If the building is a performance directed by a Master Architect then there must be some Stars, some supporting actors, some background actors; there must be some loud parts, some quiet parts; and the performance must address the audience all around.
- Concentrate on the most happening place, and the rest will follow.
Interim Crit Wed 28 March
SHOW THE SITE BOUNDARY AND IMMEDIATE SURROUNDINGS ON AT LEAST ONE PLAN.
You should try to show a study model @ 1:400 which can fit into the site slot to help you assess how well your design blends in and enhances the neighbourhood. Take photos for your portfolio.
Book your 20 min slot here. The 1520 and 1540 slots will be conducted at the mamak downstairs. These slots will not be suitable for you if you have large sheets of drawings.

Comment on your Site Analysis
A SUPER PIECE OF WORK!
(Phew! I thought I had to give up on you!)
Now that I am a bit more relieved, let me give you my impressions. (I can only comment on the OVERALL impression as the image is too small for me to make out the details.)
1) First impression: It looks very professional! Quite unlike most 1st Year students' work. I think it's the cool-grey colour scheme that gives it that mature air.
2) The graphs and satellite photos give it a scientific, cool-logic characteristic.
3) The personal icon pics really add a human dimension to the authorship! And they complement the "cold rational" material mentioned in (2). Viewers relate better to the human face and will warm up to the presentation. The sunglasses really add a dash of style! Give it an MIB aura of mystery! And those sunshade pics are about the right size. The others are way too small and look a bit passport-stunned. These mini pics need to change---must have gaya!
4) The site photos (I don't mean the landmark ones) need to be a bit more prominent (larger?) as I think you are trying to highlight the unique and "nice" views of or from the site. This is where you give viewers a tour of the site, let them enjoy the site. We need to know what's so special about the site, and I think when you do your final design presentation a lot of you will be referring to these photos.
5) All the elements of this presentation have more or less the same emphasis. You need to make ONE thing dominate--to catch the eye--create an hierarchy of emphasis.
6) The team names really lend a festive and multi-participatory air to the board and that's really good!! They give a "we're-all-together-in-this" sense of unity. But they have to be clear. Viewers need to know that they are names of teams comprising..... As they are at the moment a little bit confusing to those seeing this piece for the first time.
7) Related to the previous point: it's all about COMMUNICATION, which means it must be TOTALLY CLEAR, INFORMATIVE, CONCISE & ENTERTAINING. To the public in general.
8) It needs a more comprehensive title which should answer at least the following: site analysis for what project? by whom? from where? when done? maybe even tutored by whom?
9) Now for the very important component: The PERSONAL SITE RESPONSES, the text, the content. I can't read them yet until I receive the other file that allows me to zoom clearly. They have to be in PERFECT ENGLISH. Get help if yours isn't. I would like to suggest that you have 2 levels for consumption of your response. The whole text is one. The other could be an extract of THE MOST IMPORTANT SENTENCE/THOUGHT in you response in a much bigger Fons. (I'm sure you've seen this in mags & newspapers.)
10) Finally, I must say again that I like the graphics a lot. If you want to make it even better---try layering some things to give it more depth. I think you guys have become quite confident in visual board presentations (hopefully it hasn't been from too much hammering from me!) and as for this site analysis you can go ahead and do up the "final" one for either next Monday or Wednesday. (Monday preferred, so that we can admire both the Case Study and Site Analysis together--and get them out of our hair!)

Standardise the Site
- Draw in a running scale
- Write the dimension (length) of every side of the site and the width dimension of the PROW onto the dwg
- Scan and post here
- Make sure everybody gets a copy
Purpose: for use in making your final 1:100 model. Which means you only need the site and its immediate surroundings---the 2 flanking roads and about 6m of the other 2 neighbours.
Please do it now so that we are all working from the same platform to prepare our sketches for Monday's crits.
Case Study and Site Analysis
Monday Crits 26 Mar
You may produce a variety of schemes for discussions if you wish, but one scheme must have full set of dwg. Freehand is fine. BUT MUST BE TO SCALE.
We start at 1300 sharp. Please book your 20mins here. First ones, do not be late or everybody will be held back. I leave at 1730.

Design Exercise Wed 21 Mar
What each team needs : camera, model making instruments (knife, scissors), glue, stapler, manila card or some card that's a bit stiffer (no need expensive stuff), a sense of fun, imagination.
How much card? At the same scale as your site model, you will need the equivalent of a strip 3m wide and between 10-15 times the length of the site, plus a little bit more (another A4 area would do.) Any colour except white.
So please pin up your sketches before 1330, as we want to go straight into the Design Exercise before we do the crits.

This is for my review and general crit.
After my general comments you can all see me in small groups or individually for discussions and crits.
We must move fast.

Wild Wild Site Analysis
Haiyah... When will you guys ever learn?
THINK What is a site analysis?
Is it just the sunpath, compass direction, views, traffic circulation, existing site features, blah blah blah?
YES It's all that. But, really, anybody can pick all those things out. An analysis with JUST THOSE SEEN THINGS will be pretty boring. I mean it could be pretty---nice graphics and all---but unexciting, uninspiring, Doesn't tell us that you have ABSORBED the site and all it can offer.
How then do we take it to a different level? A higher, more imaginative level that will show creative exploration at work?
You have to SHOW THE UNSEEN THINGS! Show what only imaginative architects see in a site that other lesser mortals do not see. Show the POTENTIAL for building and intellectual+artistic enrichment that the site hides! Uncover it!
The unseen things are in your mind. And the site and the brief are your best friends in making them visible. So streeeeeeeetch your mind! Push it to it's imaginative limits...and surprise even yourself! And since these are only ideas (without restriction) you will find at the end of this flight of freedom than nothing you can design for your actual building for the Senior Day Care Centre (Project 2) will be able to beat this building you have experienced in your mind.
More importantly---you will KNOW what the boundaries are. You will know the parameters, and will be confidently guided as you come out with the most exquisite and spell-binding building you have done to date.
Of course it will also be senior friendly and tropical and blah blah blah----all those things you are sick of hearing----but just by chance, because of the Wild Wild Best excercise, it might also be all you are hoping it will be, to get you those wonderfully high marks. It just might be witty, clever, unusual, unique, original, thought-provoking, and mind-blowing---all those qualities we are looking for, all those qualities those senior citizens, at the closing stages of their journey, deserve.
If you need more time we can extend the closing of the competition to Wednesday, but only if the majority of you want that (We can't hold people back if they want to go, go, go...) Post here to indicate.
Also, I need to know who's in what group and named what and sending in how many entries.
Last tip....if you haven't already thought of it....your entries will form part of your site response and will add towards your grade.
But more importantly, it will expand your mind and help you in-------ok, ok Ian just stop it we've got the point.....

have a break...
p/s: dont worry, only clean jokes...
'a prayer for dinner parties'
A woman invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to her six-year-old daughter and said, “Would you like to say the blessing?”
“I wouldn’t know what to say,” she replied.
“Just say what you hear Mommy say,” the mother said.
The child bowed her head and said, “Dear Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?”
'mary ellen'
A man is sitting reading his newspaper when the wife sneaks up behind him and whacks him on the head with a frying pan.
“What the hell was that for? ” he asks.
“That was for the piece of paper in your trouser pockets with the name Mary Ellen written on it,” she replies.
“Don’t be silly,” he says. “Two weeks ago when I went to the races, Mary Ellen was the name of one of the horses I bet on.”
She seems satisfied at this, and she apologizes. Three days later he ’s again sitting in his chair reading when she nails him with an even bigger frying pan, knocking him out cold.
When he comes around, he asks again, “What the hell was that for? ”
“Your horse just phoned. “
'fed up'
At midnight father saw that his married son leaving home… He asks him: “What are you doing?”
The son replied: “Dad I am fed up with my life! My newly marriage is not going well, my wife and my mom keep fighting with each other! I have to pay bills for my in-laws, and I hate this life!!! I want to go far from here, I want to taste every joy of life, and I want to have every fun of life!!!”
Father said: Wait! I am coming with you..
'a rabbi, a hindu and a lawyer'
A Rabbi, a Hindu and a lawyer were driving late at night in the country when their car expired. They set out to find help, and came to a farmhouse. When they knocked at the door, the farmer explained that he had only two beds, and one of the three had to sleep in the barn with the animals. The three quickly agreed.
The Rabbi said he would sleep in the barn and let the other two have the beds. Ten minutes after the Rabbi left, there was a knock on the bedroom door. The Rabbi entered exclaiming, “I can’t sleep in the barn; there is a pig in there. It’s against my religion to sleep in the same room with a pig!”
The Hindu said he would sleep in the barn, as he had no religious problem with pigs. However, about five minutes later, the Hindu burst through the bedroom door saying, “There’s a COW in the barn! I can’t sleep in the same room as a cow! It’s against my religion!” The lawyer, anxious to get to sleep, said he’d go to the barn, as he had no problem sleeping with animals.
In two minutes, the bedroom door burst open and the pig and the cow entered…
'relatives'
A couple drove several miles down a country road with intense silence.
Not a word was said to each other. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither wanted to concede his position. As they passed a barnyard of mules and pigs, the wife sarcastically asked, “Relatives of yours?”
“Yep, ” the husband replied, “in-laws “.
hope that y'all enjoyed...im more than glad to post new jokes upon request...hehehehe

THE WILD, WILD BEST COMPETITION!
A super-rich philanthropist is calling for entries for an ideas competition. He hopes to snap up the most imaginative ideas ever for a built project to commemorate the passing away of his beloved parents.
Money is no object, the sky is the limit, and originality is king!
He’s chosen a piece of land behind the PJ Civic Center sandwiched between Jalan 7/5 and 7/4 and between some nice houses in a settled and peaceful neighborhood. And it’s just off the town center, within walking distance.
MPPJ is so moved by his generous contribution to the community and our country that they have bent over backwards to waive all building bye laws---except one*---to give designers total freedom.
For the inspiration and agenda behind this competition see PHILANTHROPIST’S STATEMENT below.
The competition entrance closes @ 1400h on Monday 12 March 2007. All entrants will be given 10 minutes to present their schemes immediately following. A distinguished panel of judges will pick the winner before the day ends.
Entrants are required to:
- Be made up of groups of 3 people (4 pax per group acceptable for special cases)
- Build their schemes into the site model already prepared
- Seek permission from the owners of the site model before inserting their schemes. (Owners reserve the right to decline permission if they deem the proposal irrevocably damaging to the site model.)
- Use large sketches to support their ideas if that helps explain the proposal
- Use any other means of communication they wish—go for clarity, imagination and the Wow! Quality
- Submit not less than one, and not more than two, schemes.
PHILANTHROPIST’S STATEMENT
My mother and my father died within a month of each other.
People tell me it was love that took them together. And I’m sure it was.
But I also know, it was cancer.
And the dreaded thing about cancer is that you never know, until you are told you have 6 months to live…or something final like that.
I have often wondered, is it that final, really? Doesn’t our memory of them somehow stretch their 6 to my 6, pass your 6, and through to eternity?
One of the most important things my parents left me to remember them by is the value of giving back to Life what Life has given you.
Life has given me more than I can use, and I intend to give back.
And it’s not just money.
It’s that certain quality of life that makes life itself worth living.
I have decided to practice what my parents taught me. I have decided to sponsor the building of a special place for the terminally ill, to give back to the community what the community so graciously gave my parents in the many happy years they spent living in Section 7, Petaling Jaya.
It will accept 20 “travelers” at any one time---only those who have 6 months or less to live---as they complete their life’s journey. It will be a place to inspire the imaginative remembrance of their lives so far, to indulge them in their final days on earth, and to fill them with hope, joy and security about the days to come under, over, away from the earth…or whatever.
This last stop will be a day care center that the world has never seen. It’s going to give the travelers the time of their lives! It’s going to be a riot! A right party! Wild, wild, and the Best!
And it’s going to be more. A health care center will be incorporated to serve the community at large without conflicting with (but certainly complementing) the experience of the day care travelers.
And it’s going to be much, much more! It’s going to be a place that visitors will come from all over the world just to marvel at it! It’s going to bring in the tourist dollar. It’s going to put PJ on the world map. And it will only be limited by the imagination of the ideas, which I hope will sprout in this competition.
For this I thank MPPJ for being willing to consider any idea that even extends beyond the chosen site to anywhere in the locale. (I am more than happy that they have insisted that the public right of way should remain.*) I applaud them for seeing that all this can be a positive and meaningful enhancement of the environment.
Why did I choose that site? I grew up in my parents’ house at the top of the steps of the public right of way, the one with the 2 red frangipani trees (which are still living.) My parents would want the spirit of the place to live on, and I think it is most apt that this place that grew this idea become part of the place that will commemorate the people who nurtured its garden.
JUDGING CRITERIA
Memorable quality
Best experience for travelers
Enhancement of neighborhood

PLANNING
My humble suggestion is that you might want to elect, or affirm the existing, leaders in your team; and you may want to elect a Group Leader to keep things on the move. We had a very good one last sem. They called him the Time Management King. Things moved. Furtherways...
Referring to next week's programme: It's quite detailed BECAUSE WE HAVE VERY LITTLE TIME LEFT TO SUBMISSION OF THE SENIOR DAY CARE CENTRE--SDCC!!! (Did someone just say...aawww we've heard that before...?)
For those items for which I did not say MARKS WILL BE ALLOTED it doesn't mean marks will not be considered. I'm looking for PARTICIPATION. That's what group work is all about.
I suggest you guys discuss the program so that you can take the lead in ALL THE ITEMS other than those which specifically say I will be doing it.
The whole programme will be messed up if the site model is not finished by Sunday night! Good Luck! and Happy Planning!
Programme 5 & 7 March 07
5 Mar
1300 Present finished site model for crit. Every student to submit one single A4 sheet report entitled "What I learnt from the making of the site model" 250 words minimum. Fons no smaller than 11. (Marks alloted.)
1330 Team presentation of Case Study material. Each team alloted 20mins. Present all material in an intelligent way to inform the Group. Be prepared to take questions from all present. Presentation must be critical--that means you must have thought it through, analysed the good and bad with suggestions on alternatives that are better. Every member of each team must take part. (Marks alloted to each team.)
1500 Group discussion on how to amalgamate All the presented (and discussed) material into a GROUP CASE STUDY SHEET (as per the Brief.) Discussion to be critical. All students must contribute to the discussion. Discussion must end with a clear WORK PLAN on how to achieve the desired outcome. (Marks alloted for effort and creativity in the discussion.)
1530-1550 Tea Break
1550-1630 Summation and closure of Mark II project by Ian. Ian's summation tentatively entitled "THE COMPLEXITY OF SIMPLICITY" (All 20 of my Session 1 students are advised to attend.) Your mark sheet will be handed out at the end.
7 Mar
1300 Present final CASE STUDY for crit.
1300 Make and finish your GROUP TOP TEN BOARD.
1345-1445 Group discussion on Top Ten Board.
1445-1545 Brainstorming on THE SITE. Every student must contribute to discussion. Storm will end with every student making a statement on WHAT MY SITE RESPONSE MIGHT BE. I suggest you don't try to think of your statement now but allow something from the Storm to drag out of you. Otherwise it might hinder your latent creativity. (Tea Break is included. We will send some representatives downstairs to tapau. Unless you guys can arrange something so nobody has to miss the discussion. No sticky oily stuff please.)
1545 Briefing by Ian on team design competition "THE WILD, WILD BEST!" (To be submitted on Mon 12 Mar.) This will make reference to the Senior Day Care Brief.
1600 Group planning on WORK PLAN for SITE ANALYSIS followed by Team planning on strategy for Wild, Wild Best! competition. (Ian not involved here.)
See my next post on PLANNING.
