Sir, here is a rough model of my new design. i no longer use the ramp to express the space of my deisgn but the curve roof at different height penetrating the screen to create different spaces.

General comments on this morning's tutorials

Generally good. There are quite a few exciting ideas floating around. They can be developed into good buildings. A few guys are still struggling, but that's ok if you can respond to my comments to you and come up with something different, take a different approach.

Next Tue's Interim Crit is CRUCIAL! We have invited guests, and that's a chance not to be missed. A chance to test MORE IDEAS with a wider audience.

By then you should have moved into BUILDINGS, not just visceral models. (Viscerals ended last week, actually.) Which means you must show DRAWINGS TO SCALE and STUDY MODELS OF BUILDINGS TO SCALE. (Freehand and rough is ok.)

"BUILDINGS" mean your proposal must have a ROOF. and

MUST have something at the side to enclose your building, keep the rain and animals out and let the natural light in.

MUST be around 400 sq m.

MUST be about ONE STOREY. (Figure that one out.)

MUST have a clear ENTRANCE/EXIT

MUST BE CONSCIOUS OF THE SUNPATH

MUST have a VARIETY of SPACES that link nicely to one another

MUST have a SECTION DRAWING that shows an interesting relationship between the interior and exterior of the building

MUST have a plan that SUPPORTS and complements the section

Community Centre

Studio 4 students, the Pusat Komuniti Lembah Pantai is well worth a visit. Not award-winning architecture, but at least it's new, with a pool, ac hall and (unopened) cafe. You might need to get a school letter and go in a group as there are security guards around and some rooms are locked.

I'm usually in Tue and Thurs by 0740, having my coffee at Alex's. It was nice last Thurs when a bunch of you Studio 4 guys joined in for a natter. My! How you guys have grown. (In maturity of thought, I mean, not physically.) (Actually, physically, too, come to think of it.) I like the increase in self-confidence that I detect: That's what architectural education is all about, really. In some upperty universites they conduct their discourses over whiskey and port by the fireside. For us, teh tarik around a perabot folding table's fine.

My group of 11 please book your tutorial slot here. 20 mins each starting at 800h. We need to have the sequence to maintain order.

The college policy is for students to be present and work in the studio during studio mornings. I'd like to maintain an open policy at tutorials. Everyone can sit in for your tutorial (and participate.) However if, for whatever reason, you prefer a one-to-one---that's ok, too. Just let me know.

Studio 3, July 2007 Starts!

Hi guys...we're at it again, after the long silence that plagued Gerald K.

I've just invited 9 peop in my tutorial group to join up as authors on this blog. (3 more need to text me their email adds)

This is inevitable, I'm afraid, as it's about the only way you can get me off-college if you need to say much. Short messages can come through sms. I'm in college only on Studio mornings.

So that you know: This isn't my personal blog as blogs are understood. It's just a vehicle for facilitating my tutorials. But we can of course optimise it by taking it beyond that if you wish---it will really depend on you. I'll respond with whatever reasonable time available. Kinda, promise.

hello everyone..just wanna drop by and have a look at this blog.. *last logged in since Nov 06* keke... how are u Ian? sorry ya disturb ur beloved students here.. i know they''ll be having lotsa stress, and sleepless night for the next few days ahead....(just like ur ex/old "monkeys" are having right now..lolx) really miss chatting wif u Ian.. not being able to see u much..usually just bumped into each other and exchange a few words then off to busy wif our own things.. looking forward for a teh-tarik session wif u, which we agreed on err... bout 6 months ago.. lolx.. and i really miss using this web-blogging thingy *now tak ada liao, dont have tat kinda bond wif lecturer laio.. sad*.. hope im still welcome here...

Final Submission Senior Day Care

Just a few thoughts after seeing what you guys submitted on Friday:

Some of you may want to start making your model immediately, even if your drawn design is not quite resloved 100%. You will probably be able to "finish designing" by completing the model and then draw up based on the model.

Those of you who have one single curved organic "freeform" "non-rectilinear" building may find your model easier to make at a slightly larger scale---maybe even 1:100. You may have to form the curvey form with strips of card.

Generally I think a model at 1:200 may not be impressive enough for most of you. It would be too small to make an impact. Going to 1:150 will not take double the effort but it should almost double the impressiveness.

A model at 1:100 would of course be best, but you have to look at your scheme to see whether a model at 1:100 would be too much work (too big) to handle within the available time left.

About your drawings, if you have to prioritise, I would say the order of importance would be:

1. Ground Floor (and Lower Ground Floor) Plan @ at least 1:150
2. 1:50 sections
3. 1:20 floor-wall-roof section
4. Site/Roof Plan
5. the other drawings.

But above all that, THE MODEL IS THE MOST IMPORTANT
