Wild Wild Site Analysis

Ok, somebody just informed me that you guys have a fantastically unbearable workload and are finding the Wild Best Competition tough-going...especially that it is unclear if there are any marks going for this... (I thought this was only Celdrick's problem.)

Haiyah... When will you guys ever learn?

THINK What is a site analysis?

Is it just the sunpath, compass direction, views, traffic circulation, existing site features, blah blah blah?

YES It's all that. But, really, anybody can pick all those things out. An analysis with JUST THOSE SEEN THINGS will be pretty boring. I mean it could be pretty---nice graphics and all---but unexciting, uninspiring, Doesn't tell us that you have ABSORBED the site and all it can offer.

How then do we take it to a different level? A higher, more imaginative level that will show creative exploration at work?

You have to SHOW THE UNSEEN THINGS! Show what only imaginative architects see in a site that other lesser mortals do not see. Show the POTENTIAL for building and intellectual+artistic enrichment that the site hides! Uncover it!

The unseen things are in your mind. And the site and the brief are your best friends in making them visible. So streeeeeeeetch your mind! Push it to it's imaginative limits...and surprise even yourself! And since these are only ideas (without restriction) you will find at the end of this flight of freedom than nothing you can design for your actual building for the Senior Day Care Centre (Project 2) will be able to beat this building you have experienced in your mind.

More importantly---you will KNOW what the boundaries are. You will know the parameters, and will be confidently guided as you come out with the most exquisite and spell-binding building you have done to date.

Of course it will also be senior friendly and tropical and blah blah blah----all those things you are sick of hearing----but just by chance, because of the Wild Wild Best excercise, it might also be all you are hoping it will be, to get you those wonderfully high marks. It just might be witty, clever, unusual, unique, original, thought-provoking, and mind-blowing---all those qualities we are looking for, all those qualities those senior citizens, at the closing stages of their journey, deserve.

If you need more time we can extend the closing of the competition to Wednesday, but only if the majority of you want that (We can't hold people back if they want to go, go, go...) Post here to indicate.

Also, I need to know who's in what group and named what and sending in how many entries.

Last tip....if you haven't already thought of it....your entries will form part of your site response and will add towards your grade.

But more importantly, it will expand your mind and help you in-------ok, ok Ian just stop it we've got the point.....

'a rabbi, a hindu and a lawyer'

A Rabbi, a Hindu and a lawyer were driving late at night in the country when their car expired. They set out to find help, and came to a farmhouse. When they knocked at the door, the farmer explained that he had only two beds, and one of the three had to sleep in the barn with the animals. The three quickly agreed.

The Rabbi said he would sleep in the barn and let the other two have the beds. Ten minutes after the Rabbi left, there was a knock on the bedroom door. The Rabbi entered exclaiming, “I can’t sleep in the barn; there is a pig in there. It’s against my religion to sleep in the same room with a pig!”

I can’t sleep in the same room as a cow! It’s against my religion!” The lawyer, anxious to get to sleep, said he’d go to the barn, as he had no problem sleeping with animals.

In two minutes, the bedroom door burst open and the pig and the cow entered…

THE WILD, WILD BEST COMPETITION!

A super-rich philanthropist is calling for entries for an ideas competition. He hopes to snap up the most imaginative ideas ever for a built project to commemorate the passing away of his beloved parents.

Money is no object, the sky is the limit, and originality is king!

He’s chosen a piece of land behind the PJ Civic Center sandwiched between Jalan 7/5 and 7/4 and between some nice houses in a settled and peaceful neighborhood. And it’s just off the town center, within walking distance.

MPPJ is so moved by his generous contribution to the community and our country that they have bent over backwards to waive all building bye laws---except one*---to give designers total freedom.

For the inspiration and agenda behind this competition see PHILANTHROPIST’S STATEMENT below.

The competition entrance closes @ 1400h on Monday 12 March 2007. All entrants will be given 10 minutes to present their schemes immediately following. A distinguished panel of judges will pick the winner before the day ends.

Entrants are required to:

1. Be made up of groups of 3 people (4 pax per group acceptable for special cases)
2. Build their schemes into the site model already prepared
3. Seek permission from the owners of the site model before inserting their schemes. (Owners reserve the right to decline permission if they deem the proposal irrevocably damaging to the site model.)
4. Use large sketches to support their ideas if that helps explain the proposal
5. Use any other means of communication they wish—go for clarity, imagination and the Wow! Quality
6. Submit not less than one, and not more than two, schemes.

PHILANTHROPIST’S STATEMENT

My mother and my father died within a month of each other.
People tell me it was love that took them together. And I’m sure it was.
But I also know, it was cancer.
And the dreaded thing about cancer is that you never know, until you are told you have 6 months to live…or something final like that.
I have often wondered, is it that final, really? Doesn’t our memory of them somehow stretch their 6 to my 6, pass your 6, and through to eternity?
One of the most important things my parents left me to remember them by is the value of giving back to Life what Life has given you.
Life has given me more than I can use, and I intend to give back.
And it’s not just money.
It’s that certain quality of life that makes life itself worth living.
I have decided to practice what my parents taught me. I have decided to sponsor the building of a special place for the terminally ill, to give back to the community what the community so graciously gave my parents in the many happy years they spent living in Section 7, Petaling Jaya.

It will accept 20 “travelers” at any one time---only those who have 6 months or less to live---as they complete their life’s journey. It will be a place to inspire the imaginative remembrance of their lives so far, to indulge them in their final days on earth, and to fill them with hope, joy and security about the days to come under, over, away from the earth…or whatever.

This last stop will be a day care center that the world has never seen. It’s going to give the travelers the time of their lives! It’s going to be a riot! A right party! Wild, wild, and the Best!

And it’s going to be more. A health care center will be incorporated to serve the community at large without conflicting with (but certainly complementing) the experience of the day care travelers.

And it’s going to be much, much more! It’s going to be a place that visitors will come from all over the world just to marvel at it! It’s going to bring in the tourist dollar. It’s going to put PJ on the world map. And it will only be limited by the imagination of the ideas, which I hope will sprout in this competition.

For this I thank MPPJ for being willing to consider any idea that even extends beyond the chosen site to anywhere in the locale. (I am more than happy that they have insisted that the public right of way should remain.*) I applaud them for seeing that all this can be a positive and meaningful enhancement of the environment.

Why did I choose that site? I grew up in my parents’ house at the top of the steps of the public right of way, the one with the 2 red frangipani trees (which are still living.) My parents would want the spirit of the place to live on, and I think it is most apt that this place that grew this idea become part of the place that will commemorate the people who nurtured its garden.

I really shouldn't be involved in your group and team work. Sorry if I've been a bit overbearing. Just trying to prevent you from having to undo too many mistakes. Anyways...

My humble suggestion is that you might want to elect, or affirm the existing, leaders in your team; and you may want to elect a Group Leader to keep things on the move. We had a very good one last sem. They called him the Time Management King. Things moved. Furtherways...

Referring to next week's programme: It's quite detailed BECAUSE WE HAVE VERY LITTLE TIME LEFT TO SUBMISSION OF THE SENIOR DAY CARE CENTRE--SDCC!!! (Did someone just say...aawww we've heard that before...?)

For those items for which I did not say MARKS WILL BE ALLOTED it doesn't mean marks will not be considered. I'm looking for PARTICIPATION. That's what group work is all about.

I suggest you guys discuss the program so that you can take the lead in ALL THE ITEMS other than those which specifically say I will be doing it.

Next week's programme is as follows:
5 Mar
1300 Present finished site model for crit. Every student to submit one single A4 sheet report entitled "What I learnt from the making of the site model" 250 words minimum. Fons no smaller than 11. (Marks alloted.)

1330 Team presentation of Case Study material. Each team alloted 20mins. Present all material in an intelligent way to inform the Group. Be prepared to take questions from all present. Presentation must be critical--that means you must have thought it through, analysed the good and bad with suggestions on alternatives that are better. Every member of each team must take part. (Marks alloted to each team.)

1500 Group discussion on how to amalgamate All the presented (and discussed) material into a GROUP CASE STUDY SHEET (as per the Brief.) Discussion to be critical. All students must contribute to the discussion. Discussion must end with a clear WORK PLAN on how to achieve the desired outcome. (Marks alloted for effort and creativity in the discussion.)

1530-1550 Tea Break

1550-1630 Summation and closure of Mark II project by Ian. Ian's summation tentatively entitled "THE COMPLEXITY OF SIMPLICITY" (All 20 of my Session 1 students are advised to attend.) Your mark sheet will be handed out at the end.

1445-1545 Brainstorming on THE SITE. Every student must contribute to discussion. Storm will end with every student making a statement on WHAT MY SITE RESPONSE MIGHT BE. I suggest you don't try to think of your statement now but allow something from the Storm to drag out of you. Otherwise it might hinder your latent creativity. (Tea Break is included. We will send some representatives downstairs to tapau. Unless you guys can arrange something so nobody has to miss the discussion. No sticky oily stuff please.)

1545 Briefing by Ian on team design competition "THE WILD, WILD BEST!" (To be submitted on Mon 12 Mar.) This will make reference to the Senior Day Care Brief.

Calvary Sunshine Home / Wed program

The latest arrangement for visiting Sunshine Home (see map) after my discussion with Ms Lee this morning is this:

My group---be there 5 mins before 1100h Wed for our 40 min visit.

We will return immediately to College after that and I will crit the remaining ones who didn't get crits yesterday. Starting no later than 1230 I'll be doing (not in order) Rosalind, Tung Yeng, Shamad, Yee Peng, Vincent, Celdrick, Pei Yee. (Did I miss out anyone?) We should finish at 1400h.

Others in my group should be busying away with the site model and site analysis. REPEAT: Try to finish the site model the same day (if you haven't finished it already.)

Ms Kwok's group will visit Sunshine Home with me at 1600. Be 5 minutes early please.

Ms Lee's group will visit the Home on Friday at 1100h with Ms Lee.

The site is nice, loads of greeneries, but the only problem is there's alot of bugs n mosquitos flying around to get a peice of you...(which is really annoying).

I think we have to think of a way to get rid of the flying bugs n keep the greens. Then it'd be perfect.

Pls prioritise your site model. All should help to finish it by wed so can photograph n do site analysis.

Site Visit Sunday 25 Feb 2007

I guess I must have caused a flurry with my text about tomorrow's site visit. This came about after my walkabout around the site this afternoon (under an umbrella.) I hadn't thought it would be that challenging from my drive-around a week or two ago. It's not an easy site. But nice. With a great deal of potential for those who like to stretch their imagination. (I can already see some of you smiling away!)

From your replies, half the group will be there. We'll do a walkabout and identify its potential, hazards, unique characteristics, drawbacks, dynamic tension with its surroundings, etc. And we'll begin to verbalise our response---both intuitive and rational---for each other's comment---both off-the-cuff and considered.

Come with your cameras, pen and paper, large scale map of Petaling Jaya (the big sheet one is best---that shows each bungalow lot, and not just streets alone) and maybe a cap or something.

Please be on time as I have to nip off on time for another appointment. 1400h at the top of Jalan Taman 7/5 Petaling Jaya. That's about the middle of the road, where it turns its only bend, behind the PJ Civic Centre. That's the one that has a ship-shaped roof, and it's part of the MPPJ office. It's opposite the State Cinema that's been converted into the Lotus Restaurant. We'll have a drink there if we have time, as we put our plans together.

I've had to arrange it this way because I want most of you to start work on the site analysis and site model on Monday 26. I shall be grading your presentations one by one, and although you can all attend everyone's presentation it is not compulsory to do so. So, as soon as you have presented then pls start simultaneously on a re-visit to the site, site modelling, analysis computerwork, etc. Organise your work into team packages to economise on time. I will brief those visiting tomorrow on the game plan. PLEASE WORK AS A TEAM. That's the only way to catch up with the others in the Semester as they are using last sem's site with the site info all ready in hand! (So Celdrick will be having it easy while we pant away!)

TOP TEN BOARD

My group have to produce one Group Reference Board---Call it the TOP TEN BOARD---comprising each student's ten favourite/most memorable buildings of all time. This is part of your Session 2 program.

We all have personal favourite buildings, buildings from anywhere in the world and anytime in history. Buildings we can't get out of our minds. We sometimes don't know why we like them, or why we can't get them out of our minds---they just stick there.

So we're going to stick them all on a corrugated modelling card. We'll make a collage, ten images from each one of the 13 of you, plus mine--making a jumble of 140 images.

Cut them up (leave out unnessary background, keep necessary background) bring them in and glue them on ONE OR TWO corrugated cardboards. I think they're about A0 size each. Not less than 1, not more than 2 cards---depending on the total size of our images.

And label them by writing their details on tiny sticky labels stuck on the image. Details? E.g. One of mine will be Willis Faber Dumas Office, Ipswich, UK, 1975, Foster Associates, Ian. (Building name, location, year completed, architect, whose favourite, geddit?)

You guys will have to start a little kitty. There will be group expenses in Session 2.

When? Start collecting your images and data now
When again? We'll do the glueing immediately AFTER the site model is submitted.

Model-maker with a problem

My dear Celdrick, everybody faced the problem, so you're not alone.

- When is a model finished, i ask you? Better question: What is a model for?
- This is not a model-making course. It is a journey in the the growth of creative thinking.
- How do we show growth? By showing differences between the start and finish (and the middle)
- Can there be growth if there's no difference between them?
- Is that why Mark I is still very much part of the final presentation? (Don't worry, Howard.)
- The final presentation is the sum total of your whole 15-minute show on 26 Feb.
- Drawings, models, speeches, writing, diagrams, images, will all participate in the show.
- They will act in ensemble, playing their part, to tell the whole story.
- The key factor in the show is the maestro who will tie everything together.
- The maestro won't be me.

The answer to your question is somewhere in there. If you're still tearing your hair out, let me know.

If the roof of my modal is actually not like what i want to do at first and because of lack of the time i mess up the roof wif a bit different of the original idea. Got a way to ammend it such as in presentation board???or must present base on what i did already?

Out of necessity for the kind of program I'm running I have to put you in teams to maximise research efficiency for the benefit of the entire group. Following is my proposal based on how I see your potential being brought out fastest. Please start yehyehing and getting greased up for the showdown. In no particular order, the 3 groups are...

• take good pics and
• do a stunning A1 sheet for 26 Feb.
• I am still very keen to know (visually) what it was in Mark I that you felt you had to retain in Mark II, why the thing(s) that you are carrying over to Mark II is(are) so important to your artist-client even as he grows old.
• And, of course, have focussed illustrations of the design decisions you have taken to make the house very user-friendly for the aged.
• And clear indications of how you have made the house fit cleverly into the chosen site so that he can get the maximum benefit from that site.
• let your A1 sheet tell the whole story
• stress the main points and play down the minor points
• more visuals, less words.

Remember, pin up with all your models (I & II and study) on a desk in front of your drawing BY 1230 SHARP on Mon 26 Feb. Presentation starts @1245. I will be grading you 20 guys alone. 15 minutes each. You present for 3-5 minutes and I grill you the rest of the time. (Remember the 3-minute practice I gave you and the advice.)

Ok guys...Session 1 is over, and we've got to get ready for Session 2...

Let me just say that it wasn't easy for me to let go of any one of you. We'd kinda built up some sort of relationship, and I could see that I was getting through with the vast wonders of the making of architecture, stuff that would excite you. Stuff that I know you are capable of producing. That most of you had begun to respond and move out of your "normal" way of thinking was, to me, sheer delight. That I am unable to complete the journey with some of you is, well... sedihlah.

But the demands of practicalities are such that we had to be together for a bit, and then split. We say a small goodbye to Tung Yeng, Shamhad, Yee Peng, Vincent, Celdrick, Kit Nam and Pei Yee. "Small" because we're still together (probably crammed up in the same studio!) and you're still very welcome in this blog community and also to approach me at any time (when I'm free) for tutoring or anything. (As my students are free to consult Ms Kwok & Ms Shereen.) It's one big freeflow of brainwaves.

The good consolation is that Shereen is absolutely wonderful as a tutor! As you might have already felt this afternoon.

I have to put on record that the tutors' decision on how to regroup was not based on personal likes or dislikes but on our experience as tutors of the characters, design energies and natural synergies needed to make each group "balanced" and equally vibrant. And, of course, students' personal decisions to try working with another tutor were respected (with no offence taken at all.)

I'm left with Azri, Howard, Niven, Roger, Rosalind, Rozalee, Siti, Sudono, Simon, Yin Lih, Chern Xi, Hui Ching and Patrick.

So let's get the show on the road...

Rozalee asked an interesting question: Whether it's ok that the model keeps changing as he makes it and will not look like what he originally showed us.

But of course! That's the whole idea of making models--that you design the design as you model. After you've passed up tomorrow you will still be able to see how you could have done it differently (and better.) So don't fret...just do it... and tell us tomorrow what you learnt from the whole process.

Submission 14 & 26 Feb

14 Feb:
You are advised to place your model in a box as it will be stacked one on top of another due to our lack of table space. No change in time of submission. Pls label model with your student i.d. north point, scale, and project title and date (February 2007 will do). Project Title to be "House for (Artist's Name). Mark II, (Name of place) Malaysia"

26 Feb:
2 A1 drawings, 1 Analytical Study sheet (per group) and Mark I. I am allowing the freedom to combine the 2 A1 drawings into 1 A0 sheet. And the content does not have to be 50/50 in terms of the drawing area. It can be a smart collage with an heirarchy of emphasis of content components. You should be thinking of how the sheet will appear as you stand in front of it to present your ideas. Lots of small things could be a strain on the eye. Think "advertising", think "selling", think "coverage" of project requirements. And, always, think "wit".

Chinese New Year should be happy. I'm already happy thinking of the wonderful show ahead!

Can Or Not?

Here are 3 buildings I visited in Beijing late last year--the Water Cube, the Bird's Nest and the National Theatre. And this is for some of you who have been pondering over whether you should try buildings you're not quite sure how to construct. Well.... if you don't build them in your imagination and let them out through your fingers messy with glue and balsa wood, then it's unlikely anybody will ever build it later on in your life.

The third building is the most controversial, being just outside the Forbidden City. But.... it's there.

submission schedule - Mark II

There appears to be some confusion about the change in submission schedule announced by Ms Kwok and sms by me today.

The new schedule is a joint decision by Ms Kwok and me. Be assured that we consult each other before major decisions such as today's.

The new schedule shall stand.

I merely sms some that they can (if for some strange reason they so desire) stick to our original deadline if they wish, but no extra marks are awarded for handing in early. (But, of course, you all know that marks are deducted for coming in late!)

One further announcement: Bring in your site photos and a location plan on Monday. I'd like to see if there is a suitable site among yours for our next project.

Right now you should all be having loads of fun making your models! Remember---if you aren't excited with your model, chances are your artist-client won't enjoy living in that house either. So let's see lots of smiling faces on Monday! Go for originality! Be bold! Let's see something we haven't seen before!

You may post your work in progress if you want quick comments before Monday.

As we are running seriously out of time (at the rate most of you are going) I am changing the schedule for next week. We won't have the crit by Ms Kwok. There will be no pinup. You will get personal crits from me, 20 minutes each. We must go like clockwork so everybody gets equal time. So come prepared, with much stuff, don't be late (or you'll lose your slot.)After 7 Feb it's production time. You'll have to get down to doing the best drawings and models ever! Old and New

First of all, I must apologise for my sharp remarks at the start of yesterday's studio. It had been a stressful last 24 hours for me. No offence intended.

Now...

The long and tiring crit yesterday was good. I think we've covered a lot of common problems and issues. Some questions you must all have thought through as you now go full swing into making Mark II would be:

1. Can I modify Mark I so that it becomes my Mark II easily, meeting all the new conditions? Wouldn't that be easier to do?

2. If I'm proposing a completely new design for Mark II can I be sure of retaining the best qualities of Mark I (which my client loved so much) as I adapt the design to new conditions?

3. In my client's mind some things need to change, some cannot, for him to enjoy the rest of his life in Mark II. Which are which?
