Deduction and Induction

This link is useful for researchers wanting a quick summary on the difference between deductive and inductive research methods.

In logic, we often refer to the two broad methods of reasoning as the deductive and inductive approaches.

Deductive reasoning works from the more general to the more specific. Sometimes this is informally called a "top-down" approach. We might begin with thinking up a theoryabout our topic of interest. We then narrow that down into more specifichypotheses that we can test. We narrow down even further when we collect observations to address the hypotheses. This ultimately leads us to be able to test the hypotheses with specific data -- a confirmation (or not) of our original theories.

Inductive reasoning works the other way, moving from specific observations to broader generalizations and theories. Informally, we sometimes call this a "bottom up" approach (please note that it's "bottom up" and not"bottoms up" which is the kind of thing the bartender says to customers when he's trying to close for the night!). In inductive reasoning, we begin with specific observations and measures, begin to detect patterns and regularities, formulate some tentative hypotheses that we can explore, and finally end up developing some general conclusions or theories.

After analyzing the site, few key responses were made such as:
- Keep the building away from disrupting the amazing view of Edinburgh Castle
- Preserve the accessible part, and utilize the inaccessible side of the site

- Black corrugated metal was chosen as facade material to respond to the grand landscape that holds Edinburgh Castle. However to stand out in the city full of historical buildings, metal is chosen to be used to show the contrast between new and old buildings.
- Inspired and responding to the surrounding landscape, the facade is broken down into fragments imitating the surface of the rock, and be part of the landscape

Double volume was given to the space because it is a space where most people will hangout, eat and enjoy the live band performance.

POINTS ON HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE

Personality:
1. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
2. Don't have negative thoughts of things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
3. Don't over do; keep your limits.
4. Don't take yourself so seriously; no one else does.
5. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip.
6. Dream more while you are awake.

An MSc It Is!

On 1 Oct 2010, after a short Q&A session, the Board of Examiners for Higher Degree, Faculty of Built Environment, University Malaya awarded me the Master of Science (Architecture).

Excerpts from the examiners' reports....

"...this is the first time that a research of this kind (has been) conducted in Malaysia. Its findings constitute a significant contribution towards a knowledge gap in the history and theory of architecture in the country." (Prof. Ezrin Arbi)

"...the candidate has produced an original work with the purpose of establishing a relationship between architects' design preoccupations and architectural excellence. ...the dissertation should be able to stand alone with the qualitative evidence and argument that had been produced for examination." (Dr. Khairul Anwar)

It was a nice birthday present! I am humbled and elated, grateful to God for sustaining me, and most of all thankful to my lovely wife for starting me on it and pushing me on right to the end.

Following is the abstract from my MSc Dissertation, entitled, DESIGN PREOCCUPATIONS OF PAM AWARD WINNERS IN POST-MILLENNIAL MALAYSIA.

Site Response, Building Program and Appropriate Technology emerged as the top design preoccupations of Malaysian architects in the first decade of the new millennium. This prime research-observation was culled from selected winners of building awards instituted by the Malaysian Board of Architects. The winners were made to answer a list of questions which was structured from preliminary investigations that comprised literature reviews and a pilot survey of the predominant ideas of a couple of distinguished architects who were academician-practitioners (one an award winner himself). The Questionnaire, Interview and Site Observation were primary instruments, and while collected data revealed design approaches and theoretical premises that were varied and dexterous, the commonality, ranking and precedents of design preoccupations were clearly discernible. Samples included an eco-friendly interpretive center in the equatorial forest, a complex street mall in a provincial town, and a showroom for luxury condominiums in the city suburbs. The research suggests that there is a strong case for a theory that Site Response, Building Program and Appropriate Technology are prerequisites that anchor an architect’s exploration of personal design preoccupations in the pursuit of excellence; and concludes with a set of recommendations for sharpening the process of design, assessment and review. Design architects and the profession in Malaysia are the main targeted beneficiaries. While the research, completed in 2010, was subject-centric—investigating the point of view of the sample architects—the researcher capitalized on his own experience of 20 years in private practice, and 4 years in simultaneous teaching.

Word on the street: It takes almost no time for the peddler who sets up her tiny cart and knee-high charcoal brazier every weekday at 5 pm at 37 Nguyen Trai Street (in District 1) to turn you into a banh mi lover. As soon as you order, she swiftly assembles a sandwich that, despite its colonial French exterior (a stubby baguettelike loaf), is Vietnamese through and through. Peel back the newspaper wrapper and bite: Your teeth crash through the bread (a touch of rice flour makes it exceptionally crispy) and into still-warm morsels of grilled pork, a crunchy spear of cucumber, sweet-tangy shreds of pickled carrot and daikon, cilantro, and a smear of Vietnamese mayo. Add a squirt of hot sauce, and this might be the best sandwich you've ever had. Or at least the best one you've ever had for 30 cents.

Eco Factor: Sustainable residential community with green roofs and sky gardens.

Vietnam-based architecture firm DWP Architects has unveiled the designs of the “Everrich 2,” a new residential community under construction in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City. The 630,000-sqm complex will have 3100 apartment units ranging from 120 to 250 sqm each, with two floors of mixed retail and public space on the ground level.

Dip. Studio 3 - mosque

Idea of the mosque as an urban sanctuary space, a natural environment in an urban context. The sanctuary space is essentially a prayer hall which is a big open space open to nature, providing a small temporary solace from daily activity and spending some time to pray.

Street Façade: Exploring the transition to the internal sanctuary. The journey begins from outside street/pedestrian continouing to internal space. The trellis/louvres provide glimpses of inside space. Monolithic walls which stand out in the streetscape as an imposing structure attracts people to explore which also have gaps between the walls providing glimpses of interior space. The exploration of the space continues to a ramp.

The trellises providing shade also starting that transition to place of worship, starting the separation from the street . The walls and trees act as visual seperation. Trellis providing light and shade on main circulation space. The Sanctuary space which is the prayer hall is essentially a big pavillion space open to nature.

The whole architecture explores the closed internal space. Where tall, monolithic imposing façade expresses a solid mass impression from the outside, but a large open space on the inside. The sense of scale progress from a human scale entrance to a heroic scale on the sanctuary space.

Dip. Studio 3 - A hindu temple Project

Hinduism believes in the Duality of Existence,as the fundamental concept of the religion. Hinduism has a diverse system if thoughts with beliefs in both Pantheism and Panantheism. Where one believes that "God is Whole" and another believes that "The Whole is in God". They believes in multiple truth,instead of individual philosophy. And they are given the freedom to worship whichever deities they believe in, at the same time worshiping the one ultimate supreme being, Brahman, and also the religion as a whole.

The temple adapts the idea of the duality of existence.At one point, the temple act as a gathering space, where the Hindus gather and together they achieve a singular consensus of the religion as a whole. And at one point, the temple act as a space where the devotees find closure, and a direct exclusive contact between them and the deities. Traveling from one space to another, the user experiences a transitional journey, as an individual and as a part of the community. Like two drops of water on water, the wave ripples and interferes each other harmoniously.

The vehicular and pedestrian approach to the site creates an interesting relationship, by placing the temple at the contour. A stop-n-go motion for the vehicular and an extended walkway that leads the pedestrian to the site and into the temple.

Staircase leads the visitor down to the lobby, garland booth/information area can be found on the way.

Main lobby area, an area for community activities and celebration, also a space for the chariot to be placed, partially sheltered by the corridor above. The colorful glass panels on the wall suggests a direction, leading the devotees to the main praying hall.

The main intention of the praying hall is to provide every single devotees the freedom to worship and express towards the specific deity they believes in. As every deity has a specific orientation they faces, a wide centric space is designed where the statues of the deities are placed in the suspended structure in the middle based on their orientation, and every devotees will pray towards the center, directly to the deity, and indirectly to the structure.
In micro the structure acts as an collective statue where the devotees pray to and find exclusive closure.
In macro the structure acts as an icon, a direction, like the Gopuram structure in every hindu temple.

Studio 3 Dip Final Presentation : A Mosque in Nature

Final presentation board

The idea is to make use of the nature as an element to make worshipper closer to their Creator. As they admiring the beauty of the surrounding, they will admire the power of the Creator that creates all the creature on this earth.

By taking advantage of the vegetation of the site, the form surrounds the nature and open towards the environment.

Nature creates spatial experience and becomes the ornament that decorates the transparent wall of the mosque.

This mosque is actually designed to bring back the basic functionality and simplicity value of a mosque.

Connections. The community reclaims public property at the top and our vector becomes mediator. A new (klang) valley for festivities or schoolchildren mucking around, see from all round.

Ahahaha pool people down. Submission begins at the beginning of prayer.

Time. Times.

and the filigree scales in gradient to subdue space.

Evocative of a mining past?, but it doubles attendance effortlessly. Underside is immaterial record of daily movement towards in unison, up down, kneel bow.

Facade design

This is a project where we were required to design a skin for shoplots located at bangsar street. The main idea of the facade is to provide protection to the site as it is overwhelmed by the neighbouring city elements.

The facade is designed to have stilts that are protruding out. Just that the arrangements differs on each side. The stilts from points, lines, and planes where viewed from different angle. Each individual stilts are installed with led lights and heat sensor film. The reason is to provide more variability to the stilts to cater for the high changes of the site.

The montage image is to portrait how the facade changes according to the site as time passes, catering different perspectives for visitors.

All done is done, just relax, be confident, and prepare yourselves for what all the critiques have to say (or maybe nothing to say.)

It's not the end of the world, you have all the luxury to make huge loads of mistakes.

Each individual has his own pace of improvement. Just do your best, show your sincerity through yourselves and very importantly your projects, constantly, and you'll be fine.

What images to show??

Hey guys and girls.

I could really see some of you all are struggling to present your design scheme in images that best describe what your building is all about.

Forget about the exterior image of your building for a moment. Ask yourself "What sorta spatial quality does my building have that I should show to the external crit?" Don't get me wrong here..exterior image is also important. It shows a lot on how your building sits onto the site and how it fits into context but it shouldn't be the main focus.

As what Khang Siang has mentioned in his previous comments "if this is about religion..I guess you ought to focus on displaying images that show the religious sides of your buildings"..that's exactly what you guys need to do! What makes your design scheme so special and different from others are those spaces inside it!

I'm gonna share a little of my studio work I did in Melbourne Uni. I won't be elaborating much about my work here. There's still some refinements that has to be done for my final submission. My studio theme is all about Atmosphere and we had to design a building that is a centre for climate cognition. My building functions as a weather museum that has a photo gallery, exhibition spaces and also a meditation space.

Each student has their own unique spatial devices that drives the design scheme which we got off from our workshop phases. Mine particularly was about the tension of spaces through instability.

The two images below are my community space. The contour wall was a direct representation of my external form, as well as what I thought would portray the tension of the spaces within my building (bull$h!t!ng your way tru ur ideas are very important! The crit bought my idea! =P )

The image below was kinda the best image that portrays what my building is about, hence I blew it the biggest in my board.

The photo gallery. Walls coming off from ceiling and side walls. This was one of my weakest space I had in my scheme. I directly copied the exact idea from my workshop outcome..which is good and bad. Good cuz that's what the Melbourne module wants you to do..progress our work based on our workshop phase...bad cuz it wasn't anything extraordinary...a copy and paste work.

My exhibition space. One of the strongest part of my scheme. Box floors extruded upwards at different height. The lightings from the box makes the floor seems floating and instable (a whole lot of stuffs about this spaces. wont talk about it here)

Hmmm..that's roughly what I would show to my external crit that would best describe what sorta spaces i have inside my building.

For the exterior..I think one good montaged image of your building onto the site which shows accessibility and site context is good enough.

Oh yeahh..a good section of your building do help a lot too in explaining what your scheme is about. If you have time, do a sectional perspective or an exploded axono (no problem to those sketchup people). Gaya to the max man! =)

Hey wassup people. I bet most of you guys don't know who am I. Well I'm Daniel and Mr Ian asked me to pen down some stuffs here to encourage you guys/girls since it's like the final moments of studio.

I'm currently in Melbourne University, doing my Bachelors of Environment. I'm in fact having my final presentation for studio this coming Tuesday! Studying abroad in Melbourne Uni taught me a lot of things, whether in living skills, social skills, and also not forgetting things in the 'architecture package' (construction, design, history, blah blah).

It's autumn right now in Melbourne and it's freeezing cold!

Now I know everyone will be busy completing their design schemes, especially doing their 3D, making physical models and drawings. Time flies by, you'll camp in digilab and not know the hour of the day. The only time you know when to eat is when the sun goes missing and when the sunlight pierce through your eyelids as you're sleeping on the bench.

Here's a quick tip for the 'final hour' preparation.

1. Don't waste time doing real looking renders. I think this would be the biggest and best tip anyone could give out. Hahahaha...seriously..don't! It's really time consuming. Instead spend more time on doing diagrams and your presentation board that can clearly illustrate your thoughts and ideas, and especially your developement since day one. I've learnt from my tutor over here that a good 3D image for presentation should always be detail enough to show your ideas and spaces, and not too detail to allow room for people to imagine. Remember that we're always suppose to sell our ideas, not our 'already-built-building-and-this-is-how-it's-suppose-to-look-like". A physical model properly litted up sells better than a real looking 3D!

This is something I did for my tutor during tutorial. Believe it or not, it's just a 20minute work. He like it and it made me feel stupid for spending hours on renders last time

2. Know when to freeze your design. I know we always criticise our own work while working on it and think it isn't good enough. Well nothing is ever good enough. We always have a better solutions and ideas when we're designing our studio scheme. We always want to give our best and showcase our best work to the external crits. Even once completing our presentation board or design, there's the devil in you that goes "Aikkss..I've should have done this" or "AhhH! This isn't resolve quite properly" or "I think if I do it this way it would be better"

The best way to solve this is to sketch out the problem and solution on a butter paper..and bring it along with you during your crit. Talk about your scheme..and do point out that you've notice a problem with your design while doing up your presentation board. Talk about it and show your crit how you've solve those problems in your butter paper. I personally think crits will appreciate you for doing so and it shows how critical you are. It's a whole new level.

This was what a few of us faced during our final studio 4. We were so busy changing this and that, we didn't had time to finish up our presentation board, hence we missed our final crit. Isn't it such a waste?

3. Talk to your tutor and make sure they know what your scheme is about inside out! Whether your design is 'geng' or not 'geng', I think showing and letting them know your progressive work for your studio is very important. They'll be the one giving you the final grade at the end of the day. Make sure all your progressive work is on your presentation board as well! Your external crit won't know what your scheme is all about. Showing them how you begin in Stage A and ended up in Stage B is important. How you get to the end isn't everything, it's the journey that is equally important!

Okay thats all for now. I can't anymore! Pulling an all nighter again! =)

The Pavilion

By creating a space with lots of fragments, the historical views around Sungai Lembing (Pahang) can be framed and spied on. The views are drawn in to become part of the architectural experience.

Recycled, or old, timber is the primary and only visible material used.

The basic material forms not only a glue-laminated envelope

but also the main structure and furniture of the pavilion.

The pavilion is embedded into the ground, or maybe it's growing out of it,
or maybe it's like the driftwood of time, washed up by the river.

It was written by an 8-year-old named Danny Dutton, who lives in Chula Vista , CA . He wrote it for his third grade homework assignment, to ' explain God. ' I wonder if any of us could have done as well ?
[ ... And he had such an assignment, in California , and someone published it, I guess miracles do happen ! ... ]

EXPLANATION OF GOD:

' One of God's main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth. He doesn ' t make grownups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way he doesn ' t have to take up his valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers. '

' God's second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times beside bedtime. God doesn't have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. Because he hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in his ears, unless he has thought of a way to turn it off. '

' God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn ' t go wasting his time by going over your mom and dad ' s head asking for something they said you couldn't have. '

' Atheists are people who don't believe in God. I don't think there are any in Chula Vista . At least there aren't any who come to our church. '

' Jesus is God's Son. He used to do all the hard work, like walking on water and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn't want to learn about God. They finally got tired of him preaching to them and they crucified him But he was good and kind, like his father, and he told his father that they didn't know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said O.K. '

' His dad (God) appreciated everything that he had done and all his hard work on earth so he told him he didn't have to go out on the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So he did. And now he helps his dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones he can take care of himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary, only more important. '

' You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time. '

' You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there's anybody you want to make happy, it's God!

Don ' t skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong. And besides the sun doesn ' t come out at the beach until noon anyway. '

' If you don't believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can't go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He's around you when you're scared, in the dark or when you can't swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids. '

' But...you shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and he can take me back anytime he pleases...

And...that's why I believe in God. '

Architectural Studio 3: Designing a Shrine

The objective of this task if for students to investigate the origins of belief systems and to analyse their impact and validity as a means of generating architectural concepts.

Buddhism & Hinduism Shrine

Design concept: -A believers belief on the journey of life. Ultimately, it is the journey to enlightenment

The slanted exterior wall would raise the awareness of how small we are in the presence of God. This feeling can be related to how someone would feel when visiting a Hindu temple and a Buddhist temple where there would be various Gods sitting on the façade of the structure looking down upon the worshippers. This is an interpretation for it to be more accepted to the public who may not be Buddhists or Hindus to actually approach the shrine to better understand it.

The interior being partly visible from certain angles due to the slits aims to raise the curiousity of the public to approach it. When walking around it, the overpowering shadows being casted upon those who walk around it would also be a call to both the Buddhist and Hindu worshipper to leave the worldly belongings to seek the truth to the enlightenment.

The journey towards the centre of the shrine may not be as pleasant due to these feelings, this build up on such emotions will only help to enhance the feeling of satisfaction once passed this claustrophobic alley and into the structure where one can finally see the full picture inside.

The repetition of square symbolizes the rhythm which represents the cycle of life- Reincarnation. Square becomes bigger and bigger- represent the level of awakening/ self realization.

Four sides represent

Buddhism- four Noble Truths- Suffering, Karma, Rebirth, Nirvana
Hinduism- "Brahmacharya", "Grihastha", "Vanaprastha", "Sannyasa"

Plan view: rippling effect symbolizes the development a compassionate heart to help all beings (a Mahayana belief which has been practiced mostly by Malaysian, NOT Theravada)

Vary in riser- becomes easier and easier to step up to the nirvana- such act of walking up steps with higher riser would require one to slightly tilt one's head down (bowing) – be humble before one sees the enlightenment

The stained glass at the middle of the inverted pyramid enables the public to experience being floating in the middle of structure where there the ground level represents the earthly life- what they do at this stage decides their afterlife (nirvana & hell)- KARMA

The project brief was to design a museum of early education in Penang. The museum will house physical & gallery, mini café, library, and exhibition space. Penang’s early education history is a long process of growth and evolution. It has been through war, fire, and colonization. This long & exciting journey inspired my design to be evoluting, dramatic, and organic.

There are already museums around the area, and usually museum contents are deemed to be boring. Thus, the need of designing something fresh and attractive is crucial. The challenge was to create a uniquely attractive museum that provokes visitors to explore the space, enjoy the content of the museum, and discuss exciting issues.

The design approach is to confront the site, issue, and topic through antagonisms. The overall shape is going against Palladian & 1970s modern style buildings at the sides and confronting the usual formal take on the topic of 'Early Education'.

The facade is designed to be attractive and sustainable at the same time,
evoking visitors’ curiosity upon entering the building. The curvy horizontal emphasis along the facade serves as a dynamic yet elegant visual to the visitors. Inside, visitors will be greeted with exciting & organic spaces made of steps and angled columns, elegantly designed to be thoroughly explored.

Facade, floor plates, and support structure are designed with innovation and efficiency in mind by embedding a system in a system. By using this method, the design responds to the issue of building sustainability through the use of building technology advancement.

In this case, the museum design is being sensitive towards the site, issue, and topic when it's pushing boundaries through questions, discussions, and innovations.

Er... following extract sounds a bit like an agenda for the place of worship we're designing for Studio 3 Dip.

"Heatherwick Studio’s initial design strategy for the UK Pavilion established three aims to meet the FCO’s key expectation that the pavilion should become one of the five most popular attractions at the Expo.

The first aim was to design a pavilion whose architecture was a direct manifestation of what it was exhibiting.

The second idea was to ensure a significant area of open public space around it so visitors could relax and choose either to enter the pavilion building, or see it clearly from a calm, non-queuing vantage point.

Dip Studio 3 (my unit) :

Yeah, it was a good show this afternoon. Pity about missing the two big Js, who were ill.

All schemes shown were workable and addressing the right, and good, design questions. None need be abandoned. Just got to take them further, examine all the further possibilities within the plans you've odi started. Some need to freak out--go wild, make your schemes more 'radical', try the untested--you know who you are. There's still time to do that.

For Thursday bring along a few scanned images of buildings that capture the sort of architectural quality you're after. Develop your scheme a bit more, whatever you can manage (which means a full set of plans, sections and quickie elevations) [Stacie, finish your model as well:) ] And be prepared to talk about how well your building fits onto your site.

The Fear of Failure

Love covers a multitude of sins.

In an address to a nation divided by the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln underscored the need to persevere in spite of failure. He said, "I am not concerned that you have failed. I am concerned that you arise." The following excerpt, which appeared in an advertisement in the Wall Street Journal, also emphasizes this point:
You've failed many times although you may not remember. You fell the first time you tried to walk, didn't you? You almost drowned the first time you tried to swim. Did you hit the ball the first time you swung the bat? Heavy hitters, the ones who hit the most home runs, also struck out a lot. R. H. Macy failed seven times before his store in New York caught on. English novelist John Cracey got 753 rejection slips before he published 564 books. Babe Ruth struck out 1330 times, but he also hit 714 home runs. Don't worry about failure. Worry about the chances you miss when you don't even try.
In a performance-oriented culture such as ours, failure belts us like a punch in the stomach. Repeated failure often results in a knockout blow, and many people give up altogether. As Comedian W. C. Fields once quipped, "If at first you don't succeed, then quit. There's no use in being a fool about it."
The problem is that a life with little failure is a life of little risk. This type of life may appear to offer safety and security, but it actually leads to guilt, boredom, further apathy and even lower feelings of self-esteem. God designed and commissioned us to be productive-many times that demands faith and risk.
Does your mate have the freedom to fail? Is he or she assured of your love-no matter what mistakes he or she makes? By slowly forging in your mate the freedom to fail, you'll help him or her become more open to change, more willing to take risks and more confident in decision making.

Prayer:

That God will give you enough faith to move beyond your fears and trust Him even in the midst of failure.

Discuss: Evaluate your own fear of failure. Are you a risk taker? Are decisions difficult? How would you evaluate your mate? What can you do to encourage him or her to move past fears?

DESIGN OR BUILDABILITY? STUDIO OR PRACTICE?

This is in response to the vibrant discussion on Studio Vs Practice. I rather enjoyed the throw outs by everybody. And my excuse for the silence was the prep for start of sem.. hehe.

I don’t really want to broaden the discussion. Great points have odi been made. Just want to throw in my simple way of seeing things and then close the Fido Anecdote.

Conceivably, there are 3 types of buildings:
1. Buildable and Built Buildings
2. Buildable but Unbuilt Buildings, &
3. Unbuildable Buildings

Those of us from Melb and here who are pretty focused on Type 1 sound like ppl who’ve seen the light, or something, after moving on. And really, there is great wealth in that arena. I’m not trying to be punny: Wealth monetarily as well as in an epistemological sense. Carry on, I say, carry on---it’s a wonderfully exciting adventure. Most of the precedents that inform our education in architecture (as far as schools of architecture go, as opposed to liberal arts faculties) are Type 1 buildings. And it is not true that Built Buildings have no “design”.

There is a great deal of Type 2 buildings around, in the Studio and in Practice. Ask any architect. Yes, there are shelved schemes in the drawer (hardisk) that the economy, the fickle client or competition jury set aside. Brilliantly designed and detailed though they may be. No? Yes, most 5th Year Thesis projects belong to this category, too.

Those of us who feel attracted to Type 3 buildings need not apologize for it, nevertheless. That your colleagues may not share your access to something so esoteric and unfathomable, do not understand their value, should not deter us. Because they shed so much light on the murkiness that is the muddied attempts at design in Type 1 and 2 buildings. Pragmatically, you need to be astute as you analyse your educational programme for crevices or plateaus which allow you to explore and place your Type 3 buildings.

At the end of the process that is Architectural Education, it is more than likely that you will be unable to divorce the Buildable from our “Unbuildable”. You will somehow see all 3 types in each of the projects you have designed. And we all hope that we will carry the holistic thing into practice. Reality, I reckon, is friendlier to the messy than the pure.

My classmate who told me the Fido story never said which sch it occurred in. I would personally grade the guy A+ for wit, for the simple act opens up a whole world of discussion on animal rights, recycling, economy of means, brief expansion, etc. But I reckon he would earn a D or E for deliverables, unless he had videoed and packaged the performance…

In any case my classmate said the guy failed the project.

Design Studio 3 - Grandmother Stories

When Mr Ian and Mr Keith asked us to sketch what we think is the most memorable part in both our house and our grandmother's house as the first task, it only took me one second to figure them out.

The window on the left is in my sister's room, not my room, but I always adore it the most. In the morning, the see-through gordyn frames the beauty of morning light and waves to the soft flow of the early wind. It is very memorable because I always look to it every morning and it is beautiful. The sad part is I hardly ever sit by the window, enjoying the beauty of it.

The picture on the right is the view from the inside of the house facing the main gate of my grandmother's house, which is located in Chinatown and is about 70 years old. It is very memorable because every Chinese New Year, the big family would gather at the house, all the sons, daughters, grandchildren, relatives, and friends; and the door becomes one wonderful beauty. A lot of shoes and sandals would pile up by the door, scattered, picturing the togetherness of the family at that particular time of celebration.

The window is a beauty by itself, looking all good with its design without being used, but the door is even more of a beauty: the door ties our memories of every Chinese New Year celebration we've had together all these years, a memory that will be cherished, timelessly.

PRECEDENT STUDIES: Analysing spatial poetics, spatial typologies and programming in architecture (Group work)
3 weeks
15% of final mark

Architectural Design Studio 3 is designed as a series of studio-based exercises leading to the design project for the Eight International Student Design Competition 2010 with the theme ‘A memorial to a Memorable Event: Making Manifest the Memory’ organised by The Commonwealth Associations of Architects (CAA).

[Caption for illustration on original brief document: The sheer scale of loss in the 2004 tsunami is beyond comprehension, and certainly, beyond any type of direct architectural representation. Our proposal for the memorial therefore does not attempt to index the event literally, but rather through abstraction. It is a landform rather than an object, an experience rather than a focal point. As part of this, the objective of Project 1 is to identify and analyze functional needs and spatial poetics through precedent studies. The main aim is to analyse and compare 2 selected architectural precedents, (1) commemoration of memories in relation to architecture & landscape; (2) commemoration of memories through built forms and spaces.

Each group of students is to analyse and compare the spatial poetics, spatial typology and programming of the selected precedents. The analysis and comparison of the design approaches for the open landscape and the built spaces will inform the preceding design projects for the remaining semester. Thus, the selection of precedents is should be critical and inspirational.

Learning Outcomes

1. Explain different spatial types in architecture, and how they inform spatial use and experience
2. Identify and analyze functional and poetic needs through case studies to inform the design project

Tasks

In groups of 3-4 students, select 2 precedents for analysis: (1) a memorial architecture that relates to the open landscape and (2) the other which relates to architecture and built spaces. The precedent study should provide the following analysis:

SPATIAL TYPOLOGIES
How are the spaces organised or arranged?
How did it inform the way spaces are used, moved through and experienced?

PROGRAMMING: What are the breakdown of areas and their functions? How are the spaces related?

SPATIAL POETICS
What are the design strategies employed to commemorate the memories/event?
How are the spaces articulated in terms of the poetics, sensuality and tactility of architectural spaces?
· Spatial types (how did the spatial typology used influenced the way spaces were experienced?)
· Flow of experience (identify key circulation/journey, and select at least 5 experiential spaces to study). For each space, study the following: Engagement with senses; Manipulation of light and its effects on space (natural & artificial); Texture and materiality; Scale and proportion of spaces (in relation to human)
· Co-relate the plan to one of the most interesting section of your selected building. Study the section and analyse how it is designed. Comment on the relationship between inside/outside, volumes and scale of space, variation and hierarchy of spaces

Subsequent to your analysis of each precedent, compare the manner in which memories are commemorated in the open landscape and the built spaces

Use diagrams, photos and minimal annotations to illustrate your analysis. The analysis should be presented in a power-point presentation of approximately 20 minutes per group. Submit a soft copy in CD on the day of presentation.

Abstract

In the subject, students are introduced, firstly, to spatial typologies in architecture; and secondly, the importance of site context and the meaning of place in design. In their preliminary design work, students engage with studies and design of different spatial typologies (i.e. linear, spiral, spine, centric, etc) for a simple dwelling space which explores the idea of architectural tectonics and experiences. Subsequently, the major project involves the design of a small scale community building (e.g. gallery, small library) which engages with the spirit of place inherent within the site, the site topography, history and socio-cultural events. The design work explores the plan-section integration to achieve architectural form that is tectonically expressive, functional and responsive to its site.

Objectives

To develop awareness of a wider place, a genius loci (town, countryside, coast), and the design response towards the place.
To emphasise the importance of site and program in architectural design.
To introduce different spatial typologies in architectural design (spatial organisation and relationships).
To emphasise the importance of section in the design of architectural space.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the subject, students will be able to:
1. Identify and explain different spatial types in architecture, and how they inform spatial use and experience
2. Identify and analyze functional and poetic needs through case studies to inform the design project
3. Create tectonic expressions of different spatial typologies which impact on the uses and experiential conditions of space
4. Generate design through conscious consideration of section-plan relationship with considerations of human scale, natural light, materiality and textures
5. Produce site analysis which document, interpret and analyze the physical conditions of the site and ‘genius loci’ of place
6. Formulate simple programmatic requirements based on the given design brief
7. Design a small scale community building which response to the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), functional program and users’ experiences
8. Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas.

This is a 6 credit hour subject held over 14 weeks. The mode of delivery will be in the form of Studio and Self-Study. The breakdown of the hours is as follows:

Student-Centered Learning Approach

A student-centered approach will be employed in the delivery of this unit. The Studio sessions will be conducted to facilitate students in the design and design process.
· The Studio is significant for the development of design works. The Studio will engage in different forms of teaching & learning methods which includes Exercises for your design projects, Peer Critiques and Review of Projects.
· As each studio session is set to achieve different milestones, attendance to all sessions is compulsory.
· Students should be self-directed in their design process, and work vigorously on their design projects within studio hours. The design tutor will facilitate your learning process.
· Students are required participate in interim reviews and pin-ups. This is compulsory and leads to the final assessment of each project.

BB7 will be used as a communication tool and information portal for students to access course materials, project briefs, assignments and announcements.

Assessments

This course will be graded in the form of coursework. It will consist of 2 projects and a portfolio submission.

The design work in Architectural Design Studio 3 is developed from a competition brief for the Eight International Student Design Competition 2010 with the theme ‘A memorial to a Memorable Event: Making Manifest the Memory’ organised by The Commonwealth Associations of Architects (CAA). The main aim of Project 1 is to introduce different spatial typologies in architecture, and how they inform spatial use and experience through precedent studies. Working in groups, you are to analyse and compare 2 selected architectural precedents. You are to select (1) an architecture that emphasise on commemoration of memories in relation to architecture & landscape; and (2) an architecture that emphasises on commemoration of memories through built forms and spaces. The analysis and comparison of the design approaches for the open landscape and the built spaces will inform the preceding design projects for the remaining semester.

Project 2 ‘A memorial to a Memorable Event: Making Manifest the Memory’
Subsequently, Project 2 consists of 3 assignments:

Assignment 2a (Group)
DISCOVERING THE PAST EVENT AND THE SITE
The main aim of Project 2a is to identify and analyse suitable site context for design exploration. In groups, investigate potential past event in Malaysia for design exploration. Carry out a thorough research and site analysis for the selected event.

Assignment 2b (Individual)
MEMORY & SITE/LANDSCAPE: MANIFESTING MEMORY THROUGH ARCHITECTURE IN THE LANDSCAPE
The main aim of Assignment 2b is to introduce simple site context (open landscape) as a significant aspect which shape architectural design. Individually, design memorial spaces within the open landscape to commemorate a significant past event selected in Assignment 2a. This design project should apply knowledge gained from precedent studies in Project 1. It emphasises on the relationship between architecture and landscape in architectural design to engage with the use and the user experience/senses.

Assignment 2c (Individual)
THE VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTRE FOR A SELECTED MEMORABLE EVENT
Assignment 2c explores architectural response to the selected event within the context of the site and programmatic requirements of a visitor interpretive centre. The purpose of the visitor centre is to showcase interpretive material related to the event and commemorate a selected event within the given locale. The project should apply the knowledge gained from Project 1, particularly organising and articulating spaces and the sensuality and poetics of space to inform user’s experiences within the architecture. Emphasis is given to design resolution integrating site, program and spatial poetics.

Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC) Portfolio

The portfolio is an edited document that is to include all the work produced in this unit. It should demonstrate the student’s learning process and outcomes.
Type of assessment and feedback
Each student will be graded in the form of formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments will provide information to guide the student in the design process. This form of assessment will be conducted through Interim Critique/Review sessions. Summative assessment will inform the student about the level of understanding and performance capabilities achieved at the end of each design project.

Attendance and Participation

Your attendance is compulsory. You are expected to attend and participate actively in class. The lectures and tutorials will assist you in expanding your ideas and your project progression.

Your work will be graded based on your performance throughout the semester. Your class participation is as important as the end product.

You are required to do your work in the studio, which is the most productive design environment.

Please adhere to the studio critic hours and submission requirements during classes.

Each of your presentation in the studio critic hours will be graded and calculated as part of your final grade.

Rules and Regulations

The School imposes a late submission penalty for work submitted late without a valid reason, which must be supported by relevant documentations, e.g. a valid medical certificate. A student MUST notify the Programme Director within 48 hours to ensure that the Board of Examiners is notified of the evidence. The evidence will assist the Board to reach a fair consensus and action.

Any work submitted after the designated dateline shall have the percentage grade assigned to the work on face value reduced by 10% for the first day and 5% for each subsequent day late. A weekend (Saturday and Sunday) counts as 1 day.

However, the lecturer(s) reserves the right to NOT accept work submitted more than 1 week late.

Class will officially begin as in the schedule. Any student who arrives late after the first half-hour of class will be considered as absent. Any medical certificate must be forwarded to the lecturer in case of any sickness, which prohibited you from attending the class.

Plagiarism will be taken as a serious case and will result in failure of the course.

Design Studio or Buildable Building Studio??

I didn't bother reading the rest of your post after you've mentioned

I personally think Design Studio is called DESIGN studio for a reason.

I'm not quite sure what you meant by designing something that can be built. You mean in terms of cost? Structurally? Client don't like crazy ideas?

If everything is designed based on what's buildable..then everything will be so boring. There won't be new innovations..no new technologies. I believe that in today's world, almost nothing is too impossible to be built. Even if there's a problem building something, this is where engineers/architects work their butt of to solve the problem.

Or..tone down cuz client thinks it's too wild? Then it's just a matter of you presenting your crazy ideas to the client..and this is where you convince them. Even if the idea is rejected...fine then. This is where the tone down comes in play. But at least you did try to sell out that lil crazy idea. What if the client buys that crazy idea? Then..don't you think you'll so darn happy when your crazy ideas get to be built? You will never know man! At least you get to say 'I've tried'.

Then again..I don't quite understand what you meant by designing something that can be built.

But hey..if students should design something buildable..why not have a subject in school called buildable building studio instead of design studio??

now, back to point 3 of my disclaimer

3) i do not discourage fancy ideas... neither do i condemn paper architecture. dreaming is good. but to realize your dream to built form and to get the world believing in your idea and willing to build it... now that's something. so yes, good architects are good negotiators in this prospect... (well, i will start a new post on this area...i'm in the mood..XD..)

yea ppl worship legends like mies, khan....jean utzon, libeskind....

but quite frankly, i feel pity for em... i seriously do... not that i have anything against them...but i feel that they deserve so much better than what they doing to themselves, that's all...

lemme tell u their story if u havent already know

louis khan... the great architect of light and sound... died a broke man... he died a broke man because he spent half his life financing his own ideas and getting them built... clients didnt wanna pay... so he foot the bill himself... yes yes, everyone in bangladesh loves the parliament house he built for them... yes yes, it was a great piece of architecture... yes yes, years later his son travelled the world to find his father's identity and made a documentary in the end... but so what? all that work... all that toil.... but you funded everything... yes a noble cause... a noble death... to be martyhered for architecture... but dont u think he deserved better? i mean if only he had the capacity to actually saw thru his designs without getting into debt.. wouldn't tht be much greater? dont u think he would have achieved more?

now lets move on to jean utzon... the amazing architect that designed the sydney opera house... but we all know (i hope u know) that he quit half way thru the project... why? because he didnt know how to handle the authorities... lost his power as architect of the project... the local council intervened... didnt wanna build what he designed... in the end his beautiful interior of the opera house didnt fall thru... what a shame.... seriously.... dun u think it would have been great that if he knew how to handle the authorities? and do you know that it is a breach of rights when the authorities behaved that way? he could have done something... but he didnt do much... or rather he wasnt prepared to avoid such things in the first place... sad isnt it? one of the greatest modern icon of the world.. yours but not yours... your design but you pulled out... your design but not entirely... your project but got stole over to some cheap architect who does not know how to appreciate your work and changes the interior...

now lets talk about libeskind... the high and mighty libeskind that everyone at Taylor's adore, thanks to architectural theory classes.... do u know the story behind freedom tower? do u know that the crappy design that is being build right now is not his design at all? he had a wonderful design... he won... but politics got in the way... he didnt anticipate that... wasnt ready for the heat... got bumped around by his client... had to fake smiles and shake cold hands in front of the media... working with a 'partner' who had no intention on working with him at all... neither had he had any intention on integrating his design with libeskind's...in the end the 'partner' won.... poor libeskind had no say in the end... sad, isnt it??

but hey, this is the very nature of our field... architects have the least protection rights in the professional world... look into it and u will find that our copyrights are super grey and not properly defined...

i have no problems with fancy ideas... i mean, ppl like Greg Lynn, Reiser Umemoto, Zaha Hadid, Tom Wiscombe, MAD Architects.... they are all fantastic architects... with fantastic design ideas... no doubt... but if u cant get it built... i find it a pity.. really...

and hence why i say studio should always emulate the real world... i have no problems tutors getting us to design crazy ideas... but i have a problem when students design with no idea how the design is going to be built.... i find it pointless sometimes, to spend so much time developing a dream building and scheme studio after studio, but then when u go out to the real world...OH... real world time, time to be 'real'...OH...kenot do crazy stuff now, 'real' world already...tone down tone down...be real be real... studio is studio practice is practice....honestly, it's nonsense...

if studio cant teach u to make ur fancy ideas a reality then to me, u are just (i want to say wasting time... but i do recognise the creative juice that happens here...)..... but yes, in a way, u are wasting time..... why not channel all that creative juice towards something buildable... it can be equally responsive and fantastic and still buildable.... OR if you wanna explore this fancy ideas..by all means go ahead.... but dont stop at designing... find out how to realize it....

cos unfortunately, that is usually the case... ppl will have fancy ideas... nice to look at... but then u look closer... u will realize that the designer had no idea how to really make it happen... again another paper architecture.... not that there is anything wrong.... just a bit pointless sometimes....

(but of cos, one can always argue that these are still ideas, yada yada yada... in near future, technology may allow for it to happen and so on... yea well ok.... but lets discover how to live peacefully on earth first before we look at the possibility of living on the moon, shall we?)

but in the end what i am trying to say is, parallel studio with practice... they are in fact the same thing... whatever u do now is almost the same as what u do in the future... and as u can see from the utzon and libeskind examples... it is more complicated when politics and legislations come into play...

i just feel that we can do better than keeping the 'purity' of students at school before they get tainted by the criterias of the real world... to me it's kinda naive... students needs to be aware of the circumstances ahead of em... they need to be aware that if they wanna explore, they gotta be ready to defend it... by all means go crazy, but know how to defend ur craziness... know how to carry it thru to the end... even in practice... then oni its worth while...

so in this respect i hope u understand what i mean when i say 'if your building dun get built then wats the point'....

and as u can clearly see in my manifesto, i am more than just getting the building built... (and in the spirit of transformers) there is more than meets the eye with me...=)
